What is Clinical Informatics?
How much 2009 ARRA HITECH stimulus funding is there?
Registration opened on 3 January 2011.
How might Clinical Informatics affect me?
One of the positive efforts during the Bush administration was to appoint
the nation's first National Health Information Technology director.
Dr. David Brailer was appointed director of the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONCHIT) in April 2004. The current Director, Dr. David Blumenthal assists our CMS secretary in guiding our nation in developing a National Health Information Infrastructure (NHII). The goal is to ensure that patient information which exists anywhere in the country will be found in a
digital (electronic) format and transmitted from its storage location to the healthcare provider at the location where the patient is being medically evaluated when it is needed. (While there are no plans for a national database of all American's information, some regions of the country have chosen to centralize your health information.)
Despite the initial euphoria, funding for this massive undertaking only materialized five (5) years later (in ARRA) after a new president (Obama) was elected to office. It remains to be seen whether infusing funding this late into a projected 10 year process (charged by then President Bush to be completed by 2014 but never funded by him) can effectively reach the NHII goal or whether an additional 5 years will need to be added to the plan.
